Big Data vs. Fast Data: What’s the Difference?

Big Data is often said to include another “V”: velocity. VoltDB, however, believes velocity represents a different problem, a problem that requires a different approach and a solution specifically designed to manage “Fast data.”

Fast data is fundamentally different from Big Data in many ways. Big Data is most typically data at rest, hundreds of terabytes or even petabytes of it, taking up lots of space on disk drives. Fast data is data in motion. It has different characteristics, different requirements and needs different technology to deal with it, technology that has the ability to analyze, decide, and act on  – that is, offer recommendations, make decisions, or take other actions – as fast as data arrives, typically in milliseconds.

Big Data and VoltDB: Data Is Fast Before it Is Big

Enterprises need a technology stack that is capable not only of ingesting and analyzing fast streams of incoming data, but also which has the ability to instantaneously act on that data by analyzing the live streams of fast data in the context of insights gleaned from historical big data stores – all as fast as the data is being generated and enters the pipeline.

Until recently, there hasn’t been a viable option for combining the best of big data with the best of fast data while providing the familiarity and expressiveness of the SQL query language, the speed and scale of NoSQL, and the relational, transactional strength and consistency of traditional RDBMS. VoltDB was created to fill the gap.

VoltDB supports big data analytical capabilities through support of SQL and Java application coding as well as ecosystem support for offerings based on Hadoop (Cloudera, MapR, Hortonworks), Apache Spark, and data warehouse offerings from HPE Vertica, Teradata, IBM Netezza and others.
