Senior Software Engineer

Position Overview

Help us maintain, extend, and optimize VoltDB’s SQL, query execution engine, and the underlying in-memory storage layer. The engineer in this role will be part of the team that oversees every aspect of VoltDB’s SQL implementation: from parsing, planning, and execution to in-memory data storage.

Requirements:

  • Love of programming languages — how they’re constructed, parsed, planned, optimized and executed
  • 7+ years programming experience
  • C++ and/or Java experience – you’ll get to do both, but it helps if you already know one well
  • A willingness to get your hands dirty writing some new code, replacing some old code and upgrading how we do things
  • Opinions on how we can advance the product, tools and processes to keep on making VoltDB better
  • Experience with compiler internals is a plus
  • Good team player

Technical Support Engineer — China

Position Overview

Businesses use VoltDB to power applications that require high performance beyond the capabilities of traditional database systems. To do this well, they look to our support engineering team as trusted advisors of best practices and experts diagnosing and solving issues and keeping the database up and running.

We’re looking for a full-time Technical Support Engineer to work in China, interacting directly with global enterprise customers providing first and second line technical support, either in the office, at customer sites, or remotely. The ideal candidate brings a keen eye for analyzing and dissecting problems, an ability to organize and prioritize, excellent written and verbal skills in English and Mandarin, and the patience and dedication to build strong relationships of trust and respect with customers. Supporting VoltDB often exposes engineers to a wide variety of customer systems and interesting technical concepts and challenges. Curiosity, self-directed learning, and persistence are helpful traits as well as being able to effectively communicate the essential information and collaborate with the engineering team in the US in order to solve more difficult issues. Occasional travel to the US for training or company events may be needed.

A typical week may involve:

  • timely responses to customer emails during business hours (China Standard Time)
  • being available for phone calls, chat sessions, or web conferences with customers to assist with urgent issues or provide technical guidance
  • collaborating with other members of the Engineering team to diagnose and resolve customers issues and answer questions
  • performing additional research and testing, learning new technologies and tools
  • contributing to process development – documenting issues to help team efficiency, improving documentation and knowledge assets, communicating product feedback from customers
  • working flexible hours to be available for occasional meetings with the US-based team
  • being in an on-call rotation (several weeks a year) that includes weekends

The core skills and experience we’re looking for include:

  • Strong communications skills (in English and Mandarin), patience and empathy
  • Experience with SQL databases, SQL query optimization a plus
  • Experience with building, operating, or supporting Linux-based back-end software, preferably distributed systems
  • Proficiency in Linux tools and an ability to write scripts and analysis tools to help with your day-to-day work, familiarity with cloud hosting services a plus
  • Basic-level Java proficiency is a plus
  • BS Computer Science or related Science/Engineering discipline with some Computer Science

Software Engineers (All Levels)

We’re looking for Software Engineers to join the VoltDB development team. In this position you will work with a super-smart engineering team to help architect, design and implement new VoltDB features such as high availability, SQL enhancements, data larger than memory support, transaction execution, integrations, management/monitoring tools, etc.

The core skills we’re looking for include:

  • Fluent in Java.
  • Experience developing UNIX/Linux systems software.
  • BS Computer Science or MS Computer Science (preferred)

Technical Sales Engineers

Description:

  • Design, develop, and test Proof of Concept initiatives;
  • Understand customer challenges and translate them into technical solutions;
  • Collaborate with customer architects to design an overall solution as reference architecture;
  • Help customers understand the company’s value proposition;
  • Work with Product Management by providing ongoing feedback to enhance company products;
  • Respond to requests for information (RFI) and requests for proposals (RFP) for both potential direct customers and partner engagements; and
  • Support marketing activities such as trade shows, industry conferences, and analyst presentations.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or a closely related field plus experience with enterprise software or application development, gained through five (5) years of progressively more responsible work experience;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of design and implementation patterns, gained through three (3) years of work experience;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Java, SQL, C#, C++, and Python, gained through three (3) years of work experience;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of relational databases and Java Database Connectivity (“JDBC”) , gained through three (3) years of work experience; and
  • Demonstrated knowledge of scalable, highly distributed systems, gained through three (3) years of work experience.

All years of experience may be gained concurrently. Candidates may reside anywhere in the United States. Telecommuting is an option.

Travel requirement: 25% (90% of the travel requirement will be domestic and 10% will be international travel)
