Clustering and Scalability

VoltDB is a shared-nothing, cluster-native relational database. There are several good reasons to build systems this way.

  1. Clusters imply redundancy and robustness. In a cluster of independent processes on independent hardware, partial failure doesn’t have to mean a halt to processing or that data will be lost. Furthermore, administrators can specify how redundancy is balanced against hardware cost and performance.
  2. Clusters allow data set size and operational throughput to scale as nodes are added to the cluster. In VoltDB’s case, performance scales almost perfectly linearly.
  3. Many users with scale problems try to shard or partition their data to multiple independent non-clustered databases. The benefit of a single unified system quickly becomes clear. In both cases, data is being divided onto many machines, but the cluster-native system is dramatically easier to manage.

VoltDB is in production in clusters of one to 30 nodes. We’ve successfully tested VoltDB in clusters of about 100 nodes. Many have asked us about 1,000 node clusters and why that’s not our goal. We believe clusters under 100 nodes offer a solid balance between performance, fault-tolerance and manageability.

There are a few applications with throughput requirements that require more than a small VoltDB cluster. Because VoltDB is often one or two orders of magnitude faster per node than competing systems, VoltDB clusters are ready for your workload, whether it’s hundreds of operations per second or millions.
