Online Transaction Processing (OLTP) databases have been around since the 1970s. Technology and data however have evolved significantly in the last 50 years. Data patterns are a lot different now than they were back then. Traditional OLTP databases were built for ingesting and processing small amounts of structured data that came in at a very predictable pace.
