VoltDB v6.3 available

Welcome to VoltDBrief! Memorial Day is almost here in the States, so all you traditionalists out there can break out the white jeans, shoes and so on. We’re also pleased to let you know we have released v6.3, which features the ability to change schema during database replication (DR) as well as a host of new sample apps in the download kit. Read John Hugg’s blog on the Call Center example app for a preview. Download v6.3 today!

Changing schema in database replication (DR) Changing schema in database replication (DR)
It is now possible to modify DR tables without stopping replication. In passive replication, changing the schema of DR tables on the master database automatically pauses DR on the replica until you make matching schema changes there. In cross datacenter replication (XDCR), we recommended pausing both clusters and ensuring all binary logs have been processed before making the schema changes and resuming on both databases. See the chapter on Database Replication in the Using VoltDB manual for more information, or find out more in the release notes.

The Fast Data Journey, in two parts

The Fast Data Journey, in two parts
We’re excited to share our latest reports: Fast Data in 5: Five steps to make the right moves with fast data – a quick dive into the world of fast data – and the longer report, Fast Data Choices: Five Steps for Evaluating Alternative Business and Technology Options, a deeper dive with additional detail and perspective. Read more about both reports in Dennis Duckworth’s recent blog post and download them today!

New use cases

New use cases
We’ve developed two new use cases: Industrial IoT Fast Data Use Case, and Retail Single-item RFID Fast Data Use Cases.

The Industrial IoT use case describes the use of VoltDB in semiconductor manufacturing, with excellent explanations of using VoltDB in the fog computing and cloud computing environments typical of semiconductor manufacturing processes.

The Retail Single-item RFID use cases, based on a recent PoC, describes two scenarios: using VoltDB to manage inventory and improve revenue by ensuring online and in-store inventories are correct up-to-the-second to ensure product placements on shelves and track demand, and leveraging fast data to implement buy-online, pickup in store (BOPIS) strategies to maximize revenues by personalizing offers based on inventory placement.

New example apps available

New example apps available
We’ve reorganized and significantly expanded the examples available in the VoltDB kit. New examples demonstrate call center tracking, mobile ads, and managing time windows for selectively deleting old data. Check out the README.md file on Github in the /examples folder for a complete list of examples.
