|Ning Shi to present to New York City Hadoop User Group
The Lambda Architecture has drawn interest for its ability to handle massive quantities of data combining batch- and stream-processing technologies, along with separate analysis and aggregation layers.
Of course, there’s a small hitch: it’s very complicated.
Join VoltDB developer Ning Shi on March 12th, 2015 with partner IIS at the NYC Hadoop User Group to learn more about when to use Lambda, and how to integrate it with other solutions such as VoltDB. Ning’s talk will cover how to replace all or part of your Lambda stack with a more integrated solution. He’ll demonstrate his points with a clear example, showing how thousands of lines of code become 30 when you collapse disparate systems with those that integrate ingestion, state, agreement and processing.

|Have you downloaded VoltDB v5.0 yet? Now’s the time!
VoltDB v5.0 has shipped and is available for download. We’re very excited to bring important new capabilities to you - read on for a synopsis, and visit VP of Engineering John Piekos’ post for more detail here.
No more VoltDB catalog – We’ve simplified building a high-performance database. You can now start an empty VoltDB database, connect, and create your database schema dynamically – no need to define your database and stored procedures ahead of time.
Ecosystem integration – Additional integrations into the Hadoop/Big Data ecosystem are designed to help ingest streaming data, process it within VoltDB, and export data seamlessly to a historical data warehouse.
Additional SQL – More is better!
Read the blog – and download v5.0!
|Strata + Hadoop, Legos and more
VoltDB participated in the recent O’Reilly Strata + Hadoop Conference, held February 17-20 in San Jose, CA. We sponsored a busy booth, evangelizing fast data and VoltDB’s new integrations with the Hadoop ecosystem. Engineer Ning Shi added technical depth, demonstrating VoltDB’s new fast data for Hadoop sample app.
Highlights of the conference: our Fast Data stack Lego® give-away, press coverage of VoltDB v5.0, and a host of analyst meetings, including briefings with GigaOm’s George Gilbert, Ovum’s Tony Baer, and IDC’s Carl Olofson.
The event was so successful we’ll be at Strata + Hadoop NYC. Mark your calendars.
|On the Blog: VoltDB in Maven Central, Papers We like
This month featured two posts, one on the availability of VoltDB on Maven Central, and one suggesting a little of our favorite reading.
Ryan Betts details how it’s now possible to distribute client JARs through the Maven Central repository. If this capability is popular with customers building VoltDB Java apps, please let us know and we’ll push our HadoopOutputFormat code to Maven as well.
In the second post, a few of our engineers suggest papers they find informative and useful.

|Flytxt Case Study available
Flytxt, a Netherlands-based Big Data Analytics solution provider for telco Communication Service Providers (CSPs), is dedicated to creating over 10 percent in economic value for its CSP customers through Fast Data/Big Data analytics. How do they deliver on that big promise? Flytxt built VoltDB into its platform to handle nearly four billion events streaming into its systems every day from more than 200 million mobile subscribers.
Flytxt’s high-performance platform integrates fast data and Big Data, with fast data processed through VoltDB.
Read the new Flytxt case study, available for download here, to see the results – which include better ARPU, higher customer conversion and retention, and more.
Download the case study today, or listen to the webinar with Ryan Betts and Flytxt’s Prateek Kapadia.
