NewSQL

NewSQL is a class of modern relational database management systems that seek to provide the same scalable performance of NoSQL systems for online transaction processing (OLTP) read-write workloads while still maintaining the ACID guarantees of a traditional database system. People like Mike Stonebraker, VoltDB’s co-founder and the creator of some of those traditional systems like Ingres and Postgres, were able to identify those limiting characteristics and to effectively remove them. This provided the benefit of being able to create a highly performant, highly scalable database that maintained some of the key benefits of traditional relational databases, things like full ACID compliance and transactions, SQL language support, etc. These new SQL-based systems were collectively called NewSQL.

5G isn’t just an incremental increase in speed and bandwidth, it’s the new face of the network and a key driver of the digital revolution. Until now, the technology was regarded as a buzzword, or something “just around the corner.” But with a number of public demonstrations, including at the recent 2018 Olympics, by industry leaders including Vodafone, Intel, Huawei, Verizon, and more, it’s safe to say that we have reached the era of 5G.

For decades, relational databases was the de-facto choice for financial service companies, until the 2000s where systems started to face challenges with scalability and availability as the amount of data being processed and consumed shaped how companies conducted their business. NoSQL databases emerged as a reaction...
