Recently, experts from Volt Active Data presented a webinar, 3 Keys to Unlock 5G Monetization: Real-time Data, Automated Decisions, BSS Modernization. The webinar focused on the ways that moving to 5G monetizes for the company making that technology investment.
Attendees asked a couple of excellent questions during the presentation and we’ve highlighted those questions and their answers below. For those who missed the webinar, you may view it on demand.

Q: Why does BSS need to run on Edge data centers? Isn’t it just the applications that run on the Edge?
A from DVR:
There are two sides to this answer: the enterprise side and the subscriber side. On the subscriber side, our partners are talking to us a great deal about this right now. In India, we are working with one of the partners that moved away from 5 centralized data centers to 200 Edge data centers for measurement and billing. The idea behind that is that when you have a very large distance for the data and billing events to transfer, you could be highly inaccurate. At the rate at which consumption happens for the prepaid world, shortening that distance is very important. Deploying in Edge networks allows our partners to charge or deduct the on prepaid cards much more accurately. There’s revenue loss prevention there, and hence monetization of their investment.
On the enterprise side we come back to the subscription model. Those implementations can quickly, in milliseconds, ask questions like: What is happening? What are you measuring? How much are you measuring? And how do I charge that? And here is the charge. Everything comes together. So you’re operating on immediate data that’s actually highly consistent. That’s why I think BSS is going to start getting deployed more and more closer to the Edge, linking between the subscribers world and the enterprise world. In both cases, I think it’s going to become the right thing to do.
Q: How is the network or system being protected and who’s involved with the platform?
A from DVR:
In various industries the common theme of people that work with Volt that we’ve observed is that they are tired of reconciling and figuring out the damage after a threat or intrusion has happened. Using Volt, because it’s actually able to go through the entire cycle of events in a single interaction, our customers are able to make real-time, in-event decisions. They’re setting up work internally to prevent the next step of the lifecycle of that threat event from ever happening because they’ve trained their system to identify such an intrusion. When this is done, the idea is you’re not just measuring to monetize, but also monetizing through loss prevention.
As it stands now, your network for intrusion prevention is a separate function outside the 5G core. I do not think 5G core itself has more than functional functions, like core operational functions are there. I don’t think there’s anything that says preventative in that respect.
