Apache Storm

VoltDB as an Alternative to Apache Storm

Apache Storm is a popular real-time streaming data framework for processing fast, large streams of data. Essentially Storm connects an incoming data source to a back-end data store while running some code on an intermediate path. Storm grew out of Nathan Marz’s work at BackType on streaming data generated from social media.

Lambda Architecture

VoltDB Simplifies Lambda Architecture Implementation

The Lambda Architecture is designed to handle massive quantities of data by taking advantage of both batch- and stream-processing methods. It attempts to balance latency, throughput, and fault-tolerance by using batch processing to provide comprehensive and accurate pre-computed views, while simultaneously using real-time stream processing to provide dynamic views.

Kinesis/Cloud

VoltDB As An Alternative To Amazon Kinesis

Amazon Kinesis is a managed service designed to handle real-time streaming of big data. It is a relatively new (November 2013) offering from Amazon Web Services. Kinesis uses a producer/consumer model, similar to the Kafka Message Queue. Developers create any number of streams to handle incoming data; capacity for each stream must be expressed as shards, each of which can handle 1000 write transactions (up to 1 MB per second) and as many as five read transactions (with an egress rate of up to two MB/sec.). Streams can be scaled by adding or removing shards.
